Description:
Universal Contracting was contracted as the General Trades Contractor for work at the Meldahl Hydroelectric Plant, a renewable hydroelectric power generation facility located on the Ohio River. The scope included interior and specialty trade services for the power plant and extensive adjacent site improvements.
Universal’s scope encompassed masonry walls, hollow metal doors and frames, overhead doors, drywall parti-tions, acoustical ceilings, and all Division 10 specialties within the power plant structure. In support of the public recreation component of the project, Universal constructed a 1.5-mile access roadway, a restroom building, picnic shelter, fishing pier, grouted walkways along the Ohio River, pervious paver walkways, and all site furnishings.
The work also included:
- Construction of a 160-foot long fishing pier on piles over the Ohio River
- Coordination of constructibility and value engineering improvements for offsite pier fabrication, reducing onsite erection time and safety hazards
- Site coordination and manpower planning to accommodate daily fluctuations in river water levels along the project corridor
This project reflects Universal’s capability to deliver complex specialty trades and site construction components in support of industrial power generation facilities and associated public recreational amenities within challenging environmental conditions.
