UC Old Chemistry Building Rehabilitation & Partial Replacement

Project Overview

Universal Contracting Corp. was selected to perform key elements of the General Trades package for the renovation of the historic UC Old Chemistry Building, originally constructed in 1917. Our work on this project focused on restoring and modernizing the facility while preserving its historic integrity. The scope of work included a variety of installations and structural improvements essential to the building’s functionality and safety.

Scope of Work

1. Job-Specific Miscellaneous Scope Items

  • Completed various job-specific tasks as requested by the Construction Manager, contributing to the overall success of the renovation project.

2. Unit Masonry & Masonry Infills

  • Unit Masonry: Executed unit masonry work to restore and reinforce the building’s structural integrity, blending new materials with the historic architecture.
  • Masonry Infills: Installed masonry infills to seamlessly integrate modern features with the original 1917 structure, maintaining the building’s aesthetic while enhancing its functionality.

3. Mobil Crane Rental

  • Coordinated the rental and operation of a mobil crane over the course of a year, facilitating the safe and efficient handling of heavy materials during the renovation process.

4. Dampproofing

  • Applied dampproofing solutions to protect the building from moisture intrusion, ensuring the longevity and durability of the restored structure.

5. Expansion Joint Cover Assemblies

  • Installed expansion joint cover assemblies to accommodate building movement, preventing cracks and damage while maintaining the structural integrity of the facility.

6. Visual Display Boards

  • Mounted visual display boards throughout the building to support instructional and informational needs, contributing to the building’s modern educational capabilities.

7. Overhead Coiling Doors & Accordion Folding Fire Doors

  • Overhead Coiling Doors: Installed overhead coiling doors to provide secure, space-saving access points within the facility.
  • Accordion Folding Fire Doors: Added accordion folding fire doors to enhance fire safety measures, ensuring compliance with safety regulations while maintaining accessibility.

8. Restroom & Safety Installations

  • Plastic Toilet Compartments: Installed durable plastic toilet compartments to enhance the functionality of restroom areas.
  • Toilet Accessories: Fitted a variety of toilet accessories to ensure the restrooms were fully equipped and ready for use.
  • Emergency Aid Specialties: Installed emergency aid equipment throughout the building, including first aid stations to ensure the safety and well-being of occupants.
  • Fire Extinguishers & Cabinets: Supplied and installed fire extinguishers and cabinets as part of the building’s comprehensive fire safety system.

9. Loading Dock Equipment

  • Equipped the building’s loading dock with modern equipment, improving the efficiency and safety of loading and unloading operations.

10. Window Shades

  • Installed window shades to regulate natural light, contributing to a comfortable interior environment while preserving energy efficiency.
